Nigeria Launches US $6.2 Million Aquaculture Centre in Epe to Boost Fish Farming
Nigeria has initiated the construction of a 35-hectare aquaculture centre in Igbonla, Epe, Lagos State, backed by a US $6.2 million investment. This ambitious project aims to expand fish farming operations in the region and enhance national food security and economic growth.
The new aquaculture centre is set to become a major hub for commercial fish production and processing, providing vital infrastructure and support services to local farmers. The facility will help reduce post-harvest losses and create a more resilient supply chain, leveraging Epe’s long-standing status as a centre for fish trading and production.
By modernising the sector and scaling up production, the government hopes to create jobs, improve livelihoods, and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to meet domestic demand while exploring export opportunities. The investment also aligns with broader efforts to diversify the agricultural sector and reduce over reliance on imports.
Construction has begun, with planners aiming to fast-track the development of the centre’s core facilities, including hatcheries, feed mills, processing units, and cold-chain infrastructure. Once operational, the site is expected to serve as a blueprint for future aquaculture projects across Nigeria.
This initiative underscores Nigeria’s increasing recognition of aquaculture’s potential as a sustainable growth sector—one that boosts economic resilience, supports small-scale producers, and contributes to overall food security.
